Mountain Farmers and Rural Europe

Mountain farmers could be given their own niche in Rural Development policy and earmarked for more aid, according to Farm Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel.

Speaking this week at a Brussels seminar on mountain agriculture, the Commissioner urged consideration of dedicating a new 'axis' or category of Pillar Two aid to mountain farmers and their specific needs.

While a rethink of Pillar Two aid categories could be on the cards,
Fischer Boel ruled out the possibility of changing aid provisions for mountain
farmers under the Less Favoured Area (LFA) scheme, which is due for
reform later this month.
